This 1,300 square foot San Juan Island retreat home and detached guest room was sited to provide a sense of integration with the stunning surroundings. Spaces are organized around selected views to maximize all available natural light creating a tranquil environment to enhance the indigenous materials used throughout. A vaulted roof shell, which sits on a steel and wood structure, contributes to the integration of interior and exterior spaces and helps control the effects of harsh winter winds. To maintain the identity of the house, the guest room became an extension of the terrace, pulled from the void, set askew and clad in concrete.
